Christmas may be behind us, but your next adventure is just getting started! Embrace the thrill of a new challenge and make 2026 a year full of unforgettable moments.

If you’ve ever imagined crossing a finish line, racing in a paddling competition, or tackling something bold, there’s no better time to begin than today!
Saying yes to a new challenge is powerful - not because it’s easy, but because it shows what you’re capable of. Right now is the perfect time to start. Not when you’re fitter, faster, or more confident. Not when life is quieter. Now - with exactly what you have, exactly where you are.
Whether it’s completing a 10K race for charity, feeling the rhythm and teamwork of a dragon boat event, taking the brave first steps into open water swimming, joining a memory walk, or just committing to getting more active - every challenge starts with a single decision: I’m going to give this a go.
You don’t need to be an athlete or experienced. Challenges are about showing up, supporting others, and discovering strength you didn’t know you had. You also won’t be alone, our events foster community, teamwork, and memories that last well beyond the finish line.
Every step, stroke, or stride can make a real difference, raising funds, awareness, and hope for causes that matter. If you’ve been waiting for a sign, this is it. Take that first step - this could be the year you surprise yourself. The year you try something new. The year you turn intention into action. The perfect time isn’t someday. It’s now.

So Where Do I Start?
Taking that first step into something new can feel daunting, but at Manvers Waterfront Boat Club, you’ll find a friendly, supportive community ready to help you every step of the way. With one annual membership giving you access to all sections, there’s no pressure to choose just one activity, you’re encouraged to explore, try new things, and discover what you enjoy most.
Here’s how to get started across our many sections.
Paddlesports – Canoeing, Kayaking & Stand-Up Paddle Boarding
One of the easiest ways to begin is to join our weekly club sessions on Saturdays from 10am to 1pm. These sessions are ideal for beginners and are supported by our welcoming volunteers, who will help you select the right craft, buoyancy aid, and paddle. All equipment is included in your membership, so there’s nothing extra to buy. During the summer season, these sessions also run on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, offering even more opportunities to get out on the water.
Open Water Swimming
Open water swimming is an unforgettable experience, and safety is always our priority. During the colder months, we introduce new swimmers from spring onwards, when water temperatures rise. For those keen to try it sooner, we offer coached dipping sessions focused on safety and confidence-building. These take place on Friday mornings and provide a supportive introduction to cold water swimming.
Life-Saving
Our life-saving section is open to young members aged 8–17 and focuses on building confidence, teamwork, and essential skills for life. In the winter, sessions are held on Sundays at Wath Leisure Centre, moving back to the lake as conditions improve in warmer months.
Running
Whether you’ve never run before or are returning after a break, our running section is designed to be inclusive and encouraging. We run Couch to 5K courses throughout the year, alongside beginner-friendly runs on Monday evenings. The focus is always on progress, enjoyment, and supporting one another - not speed.
Cycling
Through the winter, our cycling section hosts Turbo training sessions, both online and in person at the Boathouse. These sessions cater to all abilities and are a great way to stay motivated, build fitness, and ride together when the weather isn’t ideal. Along with a monthly Sunday cycle hub sponsored by Cycling UK
Triathlon
Triathlon at Manvers is about accessibility and support. With our own open water swim venue and access to a 5km cross-country loop around the lake, members can train for swimming, cycling, and running in one place. Sessions run at various times throughout the week depending on the season, making it easy to fit training around everyday life. Also a monthly Swim Bike Run Sponsored by British Triathlon. Swim sessions through the winter at the local pool.
Dragon Boating
Dragon boating is one of the most social and inclusive activities at the club. All members are welcome, from complete beginners to experienced paddlers. Our social paddles take place on Sunday afternoons, offering a fun, team-based way to get active and meet others.
Angling
Our angling section provides a calm and flexible way to enjoy the water. Day fishing is permitted 365 days a year, allowing members to fish at a time that suits them. Whether you’re experienced or brand new, you’ll find a welcoming atmosphere at the lake.
Model Boating
Model boating is available every day, with weekends being the busiest and most social. There’s no need to book - as long as you’re a member, you can simply turn up and sail. Newcomers are always welcome, and advice is freely shared.
Newfoundlands
We’re proud to host a dedicated Newfoundland group that trains at the lake most Sundays. The group is friendly and supportive, welcoming both newcomers and experienced handlers to train and learn together in a relaxed environment.
Photography
Our photography section is open to all ages and abilities, whether you’re using a smartphone or a professional camera. Sessions take place on Friday evenings at the Boat Club and offer a relaxed, friendly space to learn, share ideas, and enjoy capturing life at Manvers.
Take the First Step
At Manvers Waterfront Boat Club, it’s not about being the fastest, strongest, or most experienced - it’s about getting involved, feeling welcome, and enjoying the journey. Whatever challenge you’re ready to take on, you’ll find support, encouragement, and community right here. Becoming a member is the first step and it can all be done online at Membership | MWBC
We hope to welcome you at the lake soon.
