The latest issue of The Laker newsletter highlights a vibrant summer season at Manvers Lake, filled with community events, sporting achievements, and exciting developments for the future.

Membership continues to grow, with thousands taking part in open-water swimming sessions. The Swim Section reports a hugely successful summer with new lifeguards, family dipping sessions, and popular themed events like the Solstice, Pirate, and Parkinson’s charity swims. Looking ahead, winter brings the return of the Penguin Swim Challenge and festive Santa Splash, with plans for even more unique activities next year.

The Dragon Boat Section also had a landmark summer, achieving a strong second place at their first Bradford race and preparing for entry into the British Dragonboat Association circuit. With several members qualifying as helms and successful charity events raising vital funds, the team is eager to expand further. Alongside this, Manvers’ annual Open Day drew hundreds of visitors who enjoyed everything from paddlesports and fishing to photography and sailing—cementing the club’s role as a hub of sport and wellbeing in the region.

A major highlight of this issue is the progress on the proposed whitewater course. The project has cleared the pre-planning stage with Rotherham MBC and is now moving forward with a full planning application and fundraising drive. With a £14 million target, initial funding bids and an upcoming investor event mark key steps toward creating a world-class facility at Manvers. Other updates include improved changing facilities, new fire safety procedures, and the installation of a donation station to support future projects.

The newsletter also looks ahead to a busy calendar, from autumn charity runs and walks to the much-anticipated Waves Music Festival returning in July 2026, featuring tribute bands, local talent, and family-friendly entertainment. Overall, this issue celebrates the energy of the summer while setting the stage for an exciting winter season and ambitious long-term developments at Manvers Lake.
