Santa Dash Triumphs Over Storm Darragh!

On Saturday (December 7th), the annual Santa Dash at Manvers Lake defied the blustery conditions of Storm Darragh, as over 100 participants gathered to honour the memory of Hana Szczepkowski, who tragically passed away after a courageous battle with cancer at just 31 years old.

The parkland surrounding the lake was transformed into a festive spectacle as the runners set off. The event was a vibrant display with a parade of creative costumes that included numerous Santas, several mischievous Grinches, a few dazzling Christmas trees, and even a herd of reindeer pulling a sleigh carrying Mrs. Claus and a sack brimming with presents. Not to be outdone, a playful group of elves joined in, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Jean and Steve (Hana’s parents) said

“Our daughter Hana was a well known and loved person to many! Over the years she had represented England in Rounders, worked as a Ski guide, lived in Italy and taught PE at a couple of local schools as well as some further afield. She came into so many people’s lives in one way or another. These friends come along to honour Hana’s memory and even though the weather conditions were horrendous, plenty still showed their commitment and attended the Santa Dash.

The money raised from Raffle, Tombolas, Just Giving page, Donations, plus 50% of the registrations ( 50% goes to the charity Manvers Lake & Dearne Valley Trust) are then passed on to a local charity, Team Verrico. They help young families facing the devastating diagnosis of CANCER. They help in many different ways e.g. -: Second opinions, Transport costs to appointments, Hampers, Cleaning, Childcare, Counselling and if needed the provision of household appliances. Basically they assess what the family needs most! Not one penny is taken from monies raised to pay wages etc. Everything is given to provide help and assistance to those in need of their input.

We had numerous donations of money, gifts for raffle and tombola from the kind and generous local people and friends. Balby Tesco donated raffle prizes and Wath Tesco donated water and sweets for the runners at the end of the dash. We cannot thank these people enough!”

The Santa Dash welcomed participants of all ages, from the very young to the elderly, showcasing the community's unity in supporting of this meaningful cause.

Mark Benton, Manvers Waterfront Boat Club said

A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who took part, as well as the incredible volunteers who made the event such a remarkable success. Despite the challenges posed by Storm Darragh, the day was a great achievement!”
