Comments and Questions
Chairman’s Report 2021/22 – To be presented to ACM 26 February 2022.
Well what a year, never in my wildest expectation did I think that we would have 2400 members of the club! This is perhaps due in part to the pandemic and the huge growth in open water swimming and SUP.
The club has responded well to the ever-changing pandemic rules to enable members to use the lake and train with the club. The club is committed to developing members so that they can safety use the lake and facilities with the minimum of supervision, therefore signing as many swimmers off as possible, upskilling paddlers and sailors to operate independently remains a good way forward. This has been possible due to a relatively small band of volunteers, helpers and coaches that have enabled the members to participate and develop in their chosen skills.
We hope you get the most out of your membership by taking part in all the activities at Manvers and enjoy being part of the club. Remember the reason the costs for using the facilities are so reasonable are that we are a club and people give their time free of charge to help the club. Please feel free to help out at your club, speak to any of the committee if you are interested in volunteering.
We continue to book sessions and coaching online through webcollect, using this makes managing and measuring participation at the club definable. Thanks to all the helpers that planned and delivered these fantastic activities last year. We are looking to update this system in in 2022 so watch this space!
Over the last few years, the club/trust have strived to improve the facilities at Manvers. This year we have obtained planning permission to put a first floor into the new boat store. Along with a ground floor extension thus increasing the storage capacity in two ways. This will be a massive investment and the club/trust are trying to get prices from contractors and look how we can finance the project.
The club and trust would welcome further comments on how the various sections may wish to use this new space, so we can factor/include this in with the design feedback at the end of this meeting or email (chris.hawkesworth@manverslaketrust.co.uk with your comments).
This year we have purchased more new equipment and updated some of our older equipment. The club intends to offer any old equipment to members first at a reasonable cost. This we hope enables members to make use the lake outside club sessions and eases the congestion in the boathouse. Although with limited supply at the moment there are no plans to sell off any kit at this point.
Whole Club Review
The committee has recently undertaken a whole club review to ensure that the club structure is fit for purpose, the overall result was that it was fit for purpose. Can I thank the committee for taking to time to look at this, as it was a very positive exercise and the committee have agreed the following:
Membership Fees – from the 1st March 2022 the subscriptions will be:
Family Membership £110
Adult Membership £70
U18 Membership £33
Sign Off’s/Start Awards
Also the club currently charges for “sign offs” in open water swimming and SUP. In the future for paddlesports these will run under the British Canoeing as their start awards. All “sign offs/start awards” will cost £5 for U18* and £10 for adult, these will be used where necessary across all activities.
*U18’s must be supervised by a parent while using the lake unless agreed by the committee/section leader.
Club Rules
The club rules have been updated to the reflect the above. They have also had a wider update to keep them up to date with the latest advice from the various national governing bodies.
Paddle Sport
The section leader’s role will now be spilt in to three. We are the biggest canoe club in the country and we need a structure to manage the crazy onsite activities, develop the offsite activities and encourage members, coaches and leaders to develop in paddle sports. The committee has agreed to add a couple of positions to further support the paddle sport section, to include:
The committee have met formally (online) every month. Therefore, any club issues were dealt with rapidly online. With the rapidly growing membership and the busy sessions we needed to ensure that we could remain open to enable our members to part in activities. Can I also thank all the volunteers and members for being so sensible and understanding with the rapid changes that the club has made in response to the pandemic and maintaining social distancing.
Our new mission - To encourage participation and help members, coaches and leaders develop across all sections.
We will achieve our mission by:
There were just under 40,000 member sessions booked in 2021, this is about 10,000 more that in 2020, just over half of these were for Open Water Swimming. I can see that the 2022 is going to be another exhausting year for the Club.
The priority in the coming year is to support and develop members by making the club facilities accessible to as many people as possible and providing an interesting and accessible programme of sessions across all sections.
All that the club has achieved last year would not have been possible without the support of you. The members, the volunteers, the coaches, the section heads and also Committee.
The club relies on a relatively small number of people (who are all volunteers) to keep the club running and delivering a busy program year-round. This band of people enables the club to function and keep your membership fees as low as possible; to them all, we owe a massive thank you. I do not wish to name specific individuals you know who they are. THANK YOU.

Accounts 2021/22 MWBC
Our financial year end is 31 January 2022 the accounts go to the Accountant after this date, so the information below shows the unaudited income and expenditure for the last 12 months.
The club is on a sound financial footing; however, we do wish to increase our cash reserves to better protect the club as our income can be seasonal in nature.
We donated £20k to the Trust towards improvements and running the boathouse, the club will donate any surplus from 21/22 to the trust toward the new boat store improvements.
The club spent over £35k on purchasing new and maintaining equipment. Having ample, good safe kit remains a priority and helps the club grow and operate safely.
The club also supported training its volunteers and coaches, including supporting its coaches and volunteers on up-skilling to help the club grow and operate safely.
We also need to continue to make provision for replacing equipment as it gets worn out through the use it gets and if we wish to offer more coaching at the club the committee will consider the best ways of funding these.
If you would like any more information, then please contact Mark Toller (Treasurer) or Mark Benton Chair) Mark.Benton@Manverslaketrust.co.uk.
